Type Of Gas Commonly Used In Air Conditioner

R22 Refrigerant Gas

The R22 Gas used in air-conditioners is are classified as HFC (Hydroflourocarbon) a type of chemical that when released to the environment will affect the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Its use is now being phased out all over the world with a few countries instituting a total ban for the use of this gas in the manufacturing of air-conditioning units.

For units still using the R22 gas, it is still an effective coolant for air-conditioning units. Manufacturers have used R22 because of low compressor displacement. This means the compressor can cool the air more efficiently and will consume less power to cool the incoming air.

An R22 refrigerant also helps in absorbing water that is produced during the cooling process away from the refrigerant system. This is crucial in keeping the refrigerant part from getting water in it which will affect how it operates.

R410A Refrigerant Gas

R410A is the newest refrigerant being used by air-conditioner manufacturers. Cooling efficiency is like the R22 refrigerant but is not hazardous when it gets exposed to the environment.

Storing the R410A inside the air-conditioner is much easier because a smaller amount of the chemical is needed to generate the same cooling effect. It is an economical choice for manufacturers since they have more design options for their AC units.

The refrigerant works under high pressure which makes it a more durable coolant. It also transfers heat better than an R22 which means overheating won’t be an issue when using your AC system.
